Once a tree is far into decline, the damage is already done. If you have an ash you care about, the time to protect it is while it still looks healthy.

It can be, and we’ll be honest with you about it rather than take your money for a lost cause. For a tree that’s already in serious decline, small, or poorly placed, removal and replacement may make more sense. A few signs to watch for on ash trees specifically: thinning or dieback starting at the top of the canopy, new sprouts coming directly off the trunk or base, D-shaped exit holes about an eighth of an inch across in the bark, and S-shaped tunnels in the wood just under the bark. One of the most visible early clues is woodpecker activity heavy bark stripping, sometimes called ‘blonding’ because woodpeckers go after the larvae. If you’re seeing any of these on an ash, have it looked at soon; the earlier EAB is caught, the better the odds of saving the tree.
